julie & julia

I saw the movie, Julie & Julia yesterday and enjoyed it very much. First off, I saw it with twelve other ladies from church - so that made it a fun outing, but the movie was good, too.

The movie was a dual story, one being about Julia Child, a little bit about her life and how she came to be such an amazing cook. The other about a young woman (named Julie) who cooks her way through Julia's cookbook, Mastering the Art of French Cooking, in a year and blogs about it.

To be honest, I didn't think I would like the movie because although I know who Julia Child was, I've always thought her a little odd. I'm not a foodie person and didn't think I'd enjoy that aspect of the movie. But through Meryl Streep's wonderful portrayal of Julia, I found Ms. Child to be delightful and fun. And there wasn't as much cooking in the movie as I'd thought there would be.

I equally enjoyed the story of Julie. She was a young, struggling in her world, young woman who needed to find fulfillment in her life. She took on a project and chose to share her experience and feelings through a blog. Something any serious blogger can relate to. At least I could.

She started her Julie/Julia project and her blog in August of 2002. I was intrigued, so I googled her name and found her blog. I read through several of her posts. Her posts were much lengthier than shown in the movie and she writes about more than just cooking (and it's not G rated).

What really surprised me is that she does all this cooking but doesn't post one picture. That's definitely not how a cooking blog is done nowadays. I have a few blogging friends who post recipes and, like I said, I'm not a foodie, but I can't imagine finding any interest in their latest conquest without the pictures. The pictures are what makes me actually want to try to duplicate their creations

It would have been so fun (and appetizing) to see, in pictures, the Julia Child creations that were recreated by Julie Powell.

Also, I noticed that you're reading the first Harry Potter book... are you a fan or is this your first time through? Just curious....

Not posting pictures on a food blog? Looks like the writers didn't do their homework very well. :-)

umm, sounds like a good movie.

My hubby's been working with an ANCIENT Betty Crocker cookbook that I inherited from my mother. The recipies are different from what we normally cook nowadays (ever had raisin and sour cream pie?? it's TO DIE FOR!!) And her instructions are made for folks who need instructions to boil water. (I kid you not, it's in there) Anyway, he loves that cookbook. Better than my Southern Living cookbooks (also inherited) and my America's Test Kitchen cook book (a gift)

There's something to be said about the ladies who cooked before Martha and Emril!!!

I've been wanting to see this movie - I guess it is the blogger in me! :-D

No pictures on her blog, well yeah, that would be dissapointing.

I forgot that it recently came to the theaters - might have to get a girls night out together!

I saw this movie over the weekend and loved it. I didn't know a lot about Julia Childs except for her reputation of being somewhat quirky. I loved learning her story, and equally enjoyed Julie's story. I, too, looked up her real blog and, as the real Julie said herself, she's a bit more "down and dirty" than the Amy Allen character. As for no photos, I didn't give it a lot of thought. Did a lot of people use photos back in 2002 on their blogs? I don't know. In blog years, it seems like "olden days!" You're right, a real food blog should have photos.

I plan to see the movie. I love Meryl Streep in anything!

I've never looked at a cooking blog, maybe I should.

Oh, I definitely agree about the posting of recipes without pictures. On the rare occasion that I cook and on the even rarer occasion that I post it online, I always try to include a ton of pictures. I also find blog posts in general are more interesting with some pictures or images to break up text-heavy posts.

I find it kind of cool when movies and books are created from real bloggers - it's kind of inspirational. I once read a book called 'Petite Anglaise'

It was the story of a blogger who found a true love online and it was all quite fascinating during the head space I was in - but when I visited her blog a few times I found it really boring and haven't returned for months.
