nighty night and sweet dreams

Did you know there's a National Sleep Foundation, complete with their own website? Did you know that last week was National Sleep Awareness Week? I always miss these kinds of something national awareness day - or week - or month - or whatever. But I'm not sure there was any tangible way to celebrate such a week. And it's kinda ironic that there's such a week and it hits right before daylight savings time when we lose an hour of sleep.

I'm a night owl. As I write this, it's nearing midnight and I don't feel tired in the least. I did earlier this evening - why don't I feel it now? I usually stay up until midnight or even 1:00. And then I get up at 7:15 when Jake is getting ready for school. Don has already left by then.

Speaking of Don, we are both wondering if he has sleep apnea. I noticed on the above mentioned site that they have a section on sleep apnea. I guess I need to go read it. He doesn't sleep well and he knows he wakes himself up quite a bit. He snores [loudly] and I think that wakes him up most of the time, but there's been a few times when it seems like he has stopped breathing for a few seconds. He'll be going to the doctor soon.

Once I'm in bed, I sleep pretty well. But I am a light sleeper, so if any noise is made, I'm awake. Most of the time I fall right back asleep. And I'm a dreamer. I'm sure I dream every night and some of them are pretty intense. But I hardly remember much about them once I wake up.

I found this little quiz (which I don't normally take, but hey... what the heck) and here's what it says about my sleeping position, which is on my stomach.
What Your Sleeping Position Says

You have a passion for everything - including sleeping.

Outgoing and brash, you tend to still shock those who know you well.

You tend to be selfish. You are the most likely type to take over the whole bed.

You gravitate toward comfort and don't like extreme situations.

If you don't get enough sleep, you are: In a very bad mood

It's hard to sleep next to you because: You hog the covers.

I'm not sure I agree with most of this. If I'm needing sleep, I can be cranky - but not in a "very bad mood." And I DON'T hog the covers :]

I'll leave you with this joke...
What do you call a sleepwalking nun?
A roamin' Catholic.

I am a terrible sleeper and have slept about 5 or 6 hours a night for years. I am a morning person and very alert but I wear down around supper time and then revive again after I eat. Luckily my husband is a sound sleeper who I do not disturb getting out of bed in the middle of the night.

I am the sound sleeper here. T hears everything - poor guy. I do like to hog the bed though!! Oh, and I dream alot and only remember bits and pieces too.

Let us know about Don - T has some friends at work that have to wear a contraption at night because of sleep apnea...that can be scary, I'm sure.

I'll leave you with a funny story - my mom woke up Sunday morning and looked at the clock and it said 4:45 - and she thought "boy, its bright" and then realized it was 6:45 - my dad set the clocks back an hour...not forward!

I slept a lot, I think.

Interesting blog, something we don't talk about very often.

You know, Don could very well have sleep apnea. Snoring is one of the major signs, as well as stopping breathing. I used to count to see how long it was before Lee would start breathing again.

The sleep apnea test gives you a definite diagnosis. I hope Don takes it.

I might have to check out that site. I have interesting sleep patterns due to working night shift. I'm not sure it would all apply to me but it would be fun anyway!

I tried to go to the sleep foundation website, but couldn't get there. I WOULD like to know how to celebrate their special week, Although I may have stumbled upon it accidentally. I think I set a sleep record- being sick. I can sleep through anything.

I have always needed lots of sleep - like 7-8 hours a night.
I am a light sleeper and hear lots of things too. That is why we have a sound machine in our room - white noise.

I hope your husband can sleep better.

The last previous weeks I've slept terribly with the huge change and adjustment of going back to work.
I was lucky to get 4 or 5 of sleep a night. Man that was getting awful. I could hardly survive. I tried taking Melatonin and Tylenol PM. They didn't seem to help.
I can now sleep about a 7 hour stretch from 10:00 until 5:00. Although I sure have a hard time staying awake until 10:00. I sometimes fall asleep by 9:00.
I'm off to take that quiz.

My message meant to say 4-5 hours of sleep a night.

I was going to take that quiz...but I don't see the link.
Maybe its there and I just don't see it. If you have the link you can let me know. Otherwise no big deal.
