here she is...

... the USS New York - made from the World Trade Center

It was built with 24 tons of scrap steel from the World Trade Center.

It is the fifth in a new class of warship - designed for missions that include special operations against terrorists.

It will carry a crew of 360 sailors and 700 combat-ready Marines to be delivered ashore by helicopters and assault craft.

It is to be christened on March 1, 2008 and then commissioned later in the year.

Steel from the World Trade Center was melted down in a foundry in Amite, LA to cast the ship's bow section.

When it was poured into the molds on Sept 9, 2003, 'those big rough steelworkers treated it with total reverence,' recalled Navy Capt. Kevin Wensing, who was there. 'It was a spiritual moment for everybody there.'

Junior Chavers, foundry operations manager, said that when the trade center steel first arrived, he touched it with his hand and the 'hair on my neck stood up.' 'It had a big meaning to it for all of us,' he said. 'They knocked us down. They can't keep us down. We're going to be back.'

The ship's motto: 'Never Forget'

I've read part of that story before, but I didn't realize it was soon being put into use.

What an awesome piece of history.

Cool, huh?! I read that recently. Thought it was a great way to memorialize and assist others.

That's tear jerker, for sure. I never thought of a ship as being beautiful, but that one truly is.

This is a great post. I am going to show it to my husband. He is a marine captain and probably knows all about it, but the videos and photos are so good. thank you.
I don't know how I could do a single post on living in Alaska. I lived all over the state and in the bush part of the time for a total of 22 years. I could only do little vignettes about interesting times or places. It's certainly something to think about.

that's neat. I didn't know that's what they were going to do. I'm sure it would help to watch the news every so often.
